About Hot Rod Dave
Dave is an automotive design engineer that loves anything powerful, noisy and fast. He's worked in the automotive engineering field for over 27 years - everything from tooling to design of electrical components.
He looked for a simple solution to the anchoring problem of small boats at local lake sandbars. He'd seen similar screw in anchors, with various problems of their own, and chose to create his own design.
The boat pictured at the right is Dave's boat, and because of his penchant of putting the “pedal to the metal” more than a few times, he became known as “ Hot Rod Dave” on the local lakes.
About The DaveStick
Dave boats just like you do… You’re at the lake, Beautiful warm sunny day. Pull the boat up to your favorite sandbar, throw out the anchor, set it, relax, open a favorite refreshment, take in the sites. What could be better… until you realize your anchor didn’t hold in the shallow water when the mild wind came up, or the anchor line is to long and you have to keep your boat from colliding with the neighboring boats. That is if you’re near your boat.
If you’re like me, you’re off checking out the sights and nowhere near your boat. As you trip over other people’s anchor lines you make it back to your boat only to repeat the process all over again until the conventional anchor stays put.
There had to be a better way.
Having seen various solutions to this problem using dock poles and the like with their various difficulties, Dave refined the solution to a simple PVC tube that screws into the lake bottom, floats if accidentally dropped overboard and the DaveStick fits inside the bunks of most pontoon, small boats and some personal watercraft.
After development of screw in anchor DaveStick, the local crew at the sandbar wanted some for their use, so the following Christmas they were given out as gifts. The following spring, EVERYONE wanted one. At that time the name DaveStick” was born, thanks to Dave's friend Rick.
Dave looked into production tooling of what it would take to mass produce the DaveStick and created “Hot Rod Daves”.
A patent has been pursued and as of December 13, 2006 Hot Rod Dave's was granted Document Disclosure Protection by the United States Patent Office. Currently a formal patent is being pursued along with a copyright on the name “Davestick”.
DaveStick Facts:
- Simple, effective shallow water anchoring system for pontoons and small boats.
- Eliminates anchor setting hassles.
- Eliminates tripping hazards of conventional anchor ropes.
- Fits inside standard pontoon seat bunks.
- Lightweight - floats if accidentally dropped overboard.
- Retention force is in the neighbor hood of 100 lbs at 12” insertion to lake bottom.
- Further testing will occur when a safe method is devised to pull the Davestick to destruction.
- It is sealed so lake water won’t seep into it which later will seep out into your bunk.
- It floats
- It weighs in at 4 lbs.
HRD Future Plans
Currently HRD is pursuing prototype designing and fabrication for tier one Automotive Suppliers.
